New Year’s Resolutions

Commit to the LORD whatever you do,
and your plans will succeed.

Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

So did you make a New Year’s resolution at the beginning of this year?  Or maybe you were bold and made more than one resolution.   That’s usually the trap I had found myself falling into.  Then, the constant interruptions and disruptions we call life eventually get to us and our resolutions become distant memories of failed intentions.

So here we are in February already.  Statistics show that after only one month 46% of us have already failed or given up on our resolutions.  I don’t think it’s for a lack of trying buy maybe rather from a lack of praying.  Are we asking God what he would have us change or do instead of insisting on charting our own course?  Are we committing our plans to God?

The past two years I’ve taken a different approach to New Year’s resolutions.  I discovered the website  The idea here is that instead of making a New Year’s resolution you ask God what one word you will focus on for the year as a vision for your character and future.  Personally, I have found it very simple to keep this one word in front of me throughout the year.  I let my word direct my actions and decisions for the year.

There’s still time if you would like to give it a try.  If you go to you’ll find more information on the experiment and a suggested process for picking your word.  Spend some time with God and ask Him what one word He would have you focus on for the year.  I think that if what you will experience will be very transformational, at least it has been for me.

If you do decide to take this on we will be eager to hear your story.  The theme for this year’s CCDOC General Assembly is  “Tell It”.  It would be awesome to share some stories on how God has been moving in the lives of young adults.  If you would like to share your story with us you can do so by emailing us at

Let’s pray.

Dear Lord, today I seek Your face, wisdom and Your will. I give my plans to You and I ask that I may operate in Your grace and love.  Help me understand the direction You would have for me this year and how to rely on Your strength to help me down that path.   In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
